Polish pottery is famous all over the world. It is renowned for its striking colours, interesting and captivating designs, "people friendly" shapes and unique usability. Boleslawiec, a town on the Bobr river in the Czech-Polish border region, is located in an area with pottery traditions dating back to as early as the 7th century. This can be explained by ready availability of the natural resource of white clay used to make Boleslawiec pots. This area, called Upper Silesia, has passed hands between Germany and Poland on more than one occasion throughout history. In Germany, the area is known as Bunzlau, hence " Bunzlau" ceramics. Pottery decorated with characteristic "peacock eye" patterns can be traced back to the early 19th century. Early pieces can be admired in local museums. The old tradition is still very much alive in the locality - pots are even still made in local farmhouses.
